Futures planning is an integral part of our program a couple of years prior to a student’s leaving the educational environment and moving on through the process of graduation or as a result of reaching age 21. This is a collaborative process that is done in conjunction with the student, family members, and applicable friends, employers, community providers, medical personnel, etc. who know the student well and have an investment in their future. The process is done over the course of several meetings. The group shares a vision of what they see for the student when they have reached adulthood based upon their aptitude, interests, skills, and personality. Data is compiled and over the course of several weeks to several months, an image materializes and shows us what services, educational training, supports, etc. will be necessary to sustain the vision. The end result is a comprehensive plan of service needs and resources that is reviewed each year that the student remains at school. Any applicable changes can be made as new interests and needs evolve. The document is also used as part of the transition process with future service providers. Prior to a student leaving Ives School through graduation or at age 21, connections are made with any applicable agencies that will support the student in adulthood. This enables as smooth a transition as possible into the next phase of the student’s life.
