Elizabeth Ives School for Special Children, Inc. provides individual and small group academic instruction.  The program is eclectic in nature and borrows from several social, psychological, and educational disciplines.  Multi-modal teaching methodologies are chosen based upon each student’s needs and preferences.  The academic program concerns itself with moving the child to the next level by providing him or her with a strong foundation in the basics of reading, language arts, and mathematics.   Science and social studies are also taught.  When possible, the school uses materials that represent content that is being taught in public school. Social skills are taught and reinforced throughout every portion of the day.

For students who may enter a vocational setting upon graduation from Elizabeth Ives School, a Life Skills Program is offered.  There are several students who may better benefit from a program where practical, “hands-on” experiences are offered.  There are many children with special needs who, as they get older, find it more and more difficult to achieve consistent academic success.  Because of this, their self-esteem is diminished.  Confidence and a positive self-concept are crucial factors in future development.  The Life Skills Program at Ives School was designed to introduce students to the wide variety of options that they may encounter as they grow and develop.  They learn communication skills, daily living skills, and the basic job skills that they can later apply to the work they choose to do as adults.  Students work in the classroom doing a combination of academic and vocational activities.  Two days each week, groups of students engage in experiential activities in the community setting, some of this might be engaging in work related activities.   Students at Ives School also have the experience of “giving back” to their communities by participating in a variety of service-oriented activities that help others in need. These activities enhance self-esteem as students recognize that they have the power to improve the lives of others by contributing to the greater good.

All programs at the school are tailored to fit each child’s needs so that potential can be reached through increasing success and satisfactory with one’s efforts.  Each child is accepted and valued as an exceptional human being who has the ability to improve and achieve.

Related services, such as speech therapy and counseling are provided by Ives School.  Other services, such as occupational and physical therapy are provided by the sending systems and have been deemed necessary by the planning and placement team.
